At the first Grand Prix Finals since the coronavirus pandemic, four men’s and women’s weight categories are being contested and following today’s preliminaries the line-ups for the finals were completed.

In the women’s under-49 kilograms category, Thailand’s Olympic champion Panipak Wongpattanakit booked herself a place in the final, where she will take on Merve Dincel of Turkey.

There will be Turkish interest in three of the women’s finals tomorrow, with Sude Yaren Uzuncavdar taking on Britain’s Bianca Cook in the over +67kg category, and Hatice Kubra Ilgun taking on China’s Zongshi Luo, the world champion, in the under-57kg.

The remaining women’s final match-up will see China’s Mengyu Zhang face Jordan’s Julyana Al-Sadeq in the women’s under-67kg.

In the men’s under-58kg category, top seed and African champion Mohamed Khalil Jendoubi of Tunisia will be looking to go one better, after three second-place finishes at Grand Prix events this year, and will have a chance to do so when he faces Jang Jun of South Korea in the final.

There is also South Korean interest in the men’s under-80kg final, as Geon-Woo Seo faces Italian Simone Alessio, the 2019 world champion in the 74kg category.

In the men’s over +80kg category, Carlos Sansores of Mexico will face Cheick Sallah Cisse of the Ivory Coast, while in the under-68kg category, Ulugbek Rashitov of Uzbekistan will take on Zaid Kareem of Jordan.

As well as the medal contests tomorrow, the 2022 World Taekwondo Gala Awards are due to be held at the Al Khozama Hall in Riyadh following competition.

Accolades are set to be handed out in categories including Best Male Athlete, Best Female Athlete, Best Kick of the Year, Best Para Male Athlete and Best Para Female Athlete.
