National Sambo Championships in Jakarta attracted roughly 300 athletes, with the event bringing to an end the year in Indonesian sambo.

The Indonesia Sambo Federation reports 20 provinces were represented at the event which was staged at the Bulungan Sports Complex, a 2018 Asian Games venue.

As well as competition, the event offered a chance to develop sambo infrastructure in the country.

More than 20 national referees were in attendance and International Sambo Federation-certified referees Martin Tandionugrohon and Maria Stella Rosario led a referee seminar.

Rosario was recently named best referee at the World Sambo Championships in Kyrgyzstan.

"All of these successful championships are great indicators that the development of sambo in Indonesia is on the right track," Indonesia Sambo Federation deputy secretary general Muhamad Riyad said.

The Indonesia Sambo Federation plans to hold an open tournament for overseas athletes next year, so this was a helpful tune-up event before that.
