The United States men's ice hockey team for the Lake Placid 2023 International University Sports Federation (FISU) Winter World University Games will be drawn entirely from National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III players.

The men's team will compete on home ice in this flagship FISU competition for the first time in more than half a century.

Twenty three players picked mid-season from their collegiate teams are to open their campaign against Britain on January 11 at Clarkson University's Cheel Arena in Potsdam, the day before the Opening Ceremony for the Games, scheduled for January 12 to 22.

Twelve of the American players are from eastern universities and colleges and 11 from the west.

Defending NCAA Division III champion Adrian College has three players on the roster.

Head coach Mark Taylor, of Hobart College, will lead the staff, joined by Lake Placid native Bill Beaney, previously the Middlebury College coach and general manager.

"This was a really difficult process for the staff," Taylor told USCHO.

"We like the balance of the group and know there were enough players interested that we could have made up two rosters.

"We think we have a very good group including some players in reserve that may be included [depending on injury or illness] prior to our final roster submission on January 10."

Four teams are to advance to the knockout round from 12, playing at the renovated Herb Brooks Arena at the Olympic Center, site of the "Miracle on Ice" from the 1980 Winter Olympics.

The US are in Pool B with Britain, Kazakhstna, Slovakia, Hungary and South Korea; while Pool A consists of top-seed Canada, Czech Republic, Latvia, Sweden, Japan and Ukraine.

The hosts are seeking its first Games medal in the sport since 1972, when it took bronze in a three-team field also featuring the Soviet Union and Canada; also in Lake Placid.

Lake Placid 2023 is the first time the winter edition of the FISU Games has been held since the 2019 Games in Krasnoyarsk.

The Lucerne 2021 Winter Games were cancelled due to COVID-19 restrictions in Switzerland.
