Former Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Organising Committee executive Haruyuki Takahashi has been granted bail, it has been reported.

Takahashi’s on trial for allegedly receiving bribes in connection to the Games.

According to Kyodo News, the Tokyo District Court decided to grant bail on Monday, with the amount set at ¥80 million ($603,000/£497,913/ €565,738).

The 78-year-old Takahashi has been accused of accepting bribes through five routes, including from ad firm ADK Holdings Inc. and stuffed toy maker Sun Arrow Inc.

In August this year, Takahashi and an executive at advertising giant Dentsu Inc was arrested on suspicion of receiving bribes.

The widening corruption scandal over the selection of sponsors for last year's postponed Summer Games has tarnished the reputation of the country.

According to Kyodo News, bail was granted as the court deemed Takahashi was not going to flee or destroy evidence in the case.

The Japanese official has allegedly received a total of ¥198 million ($1.4 million/£1.2 million/€1.3 million) in bribes.

So far, Takahashi has denied all charges.

Last week, three people, including former chairman of Aoki Holdings Hironori Aoki, have been charged in court with bribing Takahashi.

The developing scandal has also impacted Sapporo's aim to bid for the 2030 Winter Olympics.

Earlier, the Japanese Olympic Committee and the City of Sapporo announced they were pausing their efforts to bid for the Games.
