France's Minister of Culture Rima Abdul-Malak has assured most festivals will be able to go ahead during and before the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Paris despite security concerns, but stressed solutions were still to be found for Lollapalooza and Rock en Seine.

An emergency meeting with festival organisers was held in October, with Abdul-Malak admitting some festivals may be affected by the added security needed for the Games, meaning staffing issues would make holding major events such as music festivals, difficult.

Another appointment between festival representatives - such as Prodiss, Current Music Union and  France Festivals - and the Ministry of Culture was held yesterday, continuing talks that stemmed from concerns made by Minister of the Interior Gérald Darmanin.

Darmanin revealed the Games would need "30,000 police and gendarmes per day", leading to questions over security elsewhere across the country.

Prior to the meeting with Abdul-Malak, festival bosses admitted they were still worried about cancellations for another year, citing the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on its events already, to French newspaper Le Parisien.

"We had a working meeting with around forty festivals at the Transmusicales in Rennes in December and they are unanimous: after two blank years linked to the health crisis, in 2020 and 2021, a new cancellation would not be bearable," said Aurélie Hannedouche, director of the Union of Contemporary Music to Le Parisien.

Following the meeting, the Ministry of Culture highlighted framework which said only festivals mobilising mobile force units (UFMs) during the period covering the Olympics and Paralympics would face date or format adjustments, claiming that reports in the media had been exaggerated.

"Out of the 15 festivals concerned in these two periods and which mobilise UFMs, solutions have already been found for most of these events, with the exception of Lollapalooza, in the ParisLongchamp Racecourse and Rock en Seine, in Saint-Cloud, for whom the work continues to find solutions," said the Ministry of Culture.

"The Minister expressed her astonishment when she read in the press that certain professional organisations mentioned the figure of 2,600 festivals affected by cancellations, whereas this figure is not based on any evaluation and the circular specifies the opposite.

"To date, no festival is in the situation of having to cancel: those who do not mobilise mobile force units are intended to hold.

"Reconciling cultural and sporting life during this period is the objective set by the Ministers to the prefects."

Hannedouche calimed she was "reassured" by the meeting, while general manager of Prodiss, Malika Seguineau said discussions were "constructive".

Seguineau did add the Games would affect the music industry, with stadium concerts unable to go ahead due to venues being used.
