Rafael Nadal is to enter a team in the inaugural season of the International Powerboating Union (UIM) E1 series for electric boats.

The UIM E1 World Championship, is set to begin later this year.

"I’m really excited to be getting involved with a project like E1 that values sustainability and will make a positive impact on society as a whole, especially in coastal communities," Nadal said in a statement.

"I also like the fact that E1 has a clear mission and is committed to preserving marine ecosystems," Nadal added.

"As a professional athlete, I recognise how making marginal gains has a positive impact on performance."

The series was devised by Electric Formula E founder Alejandro Agag, founder of the electric Formula E and Extreme E motor racing and off-road series.

Red Bull Formula One driver Sergio Perez has also signed up for the series and sent Nadal a social media message.

"I know you have 22 Grand Slams, but let’s see who is the champion of the water in E1 ,Vamos!" Perez said.

Nadal, who is seeded number two for the Australian Open, responded: "I’m always waiting for the races and it's been real pleasure getting to know you.

"See you soon, a warm embrace and good luck with everything."

Nadal's boat is set to use a yellow livery to match the colour he uses for his rackets.
