Brignone, who won silver in the giant slalom at the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics, took victory in the Austrian village in 1min 00.21sec.

Brignone’s victory saw her become the first Italian woman to win 21 World Cup races, as she moved in front of her compatriot Sofia Goggia.

The race was switched from a downhill event to a super-G and then shortened following significant snowfall but Brignone mastered the conditions to take the victory.

"I'm really satisfied and proud of what I've been doing today on the slope," said Brignone.

"I started the season really badly with the speed, and with speed skis I had no confidence.

"It's coming back now and I know I can do what I want with my skis."

Swiss athletes completed the podium with Joana Haehlen in second in 1:00.75, and third place going the way of Lara Gut-Behrami in 1:00.87.

Haehlen was starting in bib number 18 and equalled her career best finish in coming second, after previously managing that in the downhill at the World Cup finals last season.

Meanwhile, Goggia, who now sits second for World Cup wins among Italian women, raced in St Anton for the first time in nearly a month after a break for a holiday, crashing out, uninjured, halfway down the course.

A second women’s super-G race is scheduled to take place at the resort tomorrow.
