Eileen Gu returned to the slopes after a near-year absence, winning her first competition at the International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS) Freeski World Cup in Calgary, winning the women's halfpipe - 11 months after winning the gold medal at the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics.

Gu became a national hero in China, winning two gold medals and a silver at the Games while representing the nation of her mother's birth.

After comfortably qualifying for the final with the best two runs, Gu again recorded the best three attempts, with 95.00 in run two and three, accompanied by an opener of 90.00.

Canadian Rachael Karker had three runs all above 80, saving the best until last with 89.00.

The rest of the field were a sizable margin behind them, but a second run from young American Hanna Faulhaber scored her 77.25 for the bronze.

Canada's Amy Fraser and Zhang Kexin of China were fourth and fifth, with American Riley Jacobs, Dillan Glennie of Canada and Kim Dae-un of South Korea completing the final line-up.

In men's qualification, both Finland's Jon Sallinen and Canada's Brendan Mackay finished with the joint-top score, but it was the Finn who took the gold dramatically with his last run.

Mackay opened with a score of 94.50, while Sallinen failed to get a decent mark on the board in his first two attempts.

Canadian Simon d'Artois remained a contender for gold going into the last round too with a first run score of 90.75.

While Mackay could not improve on his opener, Sallinen finally strung together a great run, with a score of 96.00 to jump from bottom to the top of the standings.

Mackay would get the silver, with his compatriot d'Artois improving - but only to 93.00.

Four Americans followed in a row, with Alex Ferreira scoring 92.50 for fourth followed by David Wise in fifth.

Birk Irving and Aaron Blunck were sixth and seventh.
