Australian Ricky Tang was involved in two upsets today at the Oceania Badminton Championships as he progressed in all three competitions he played in Auckland.

Tang started out the day alongside compatriot Kaitlyn Ea in the mixed doubles tournament where he took major scalps in Adam Jeffrey and Justine Villegas.

The second seed New Zealanders were stunned as they fell to a 11-21, 21-15, 21-13 defeat.

"We felt we were the underdogs and we weren’t expecting to win," Tang said.

"We've never paired together in the open level so at the start we were quite nervous, but we kept it together and fought back to win the game."

Tang's fine form then continued in the men's singles as he dispatched tournament third seed Adam Dolman of Australia.

The match lasted 58 minutes and saw Tang prevail 21-10, 18-21, 21-12.

"I've had three matches today, the first game I was completely in control and my attack was really good," Tang said after beating Dolman.

"In the second I got a bit tired and wanted to save some energy for the third game.

"The third was a mental battle for sure, he was fighting but I didn't let him get in my head and I put my foot on the pedal and made a gap, I didn’t let him affect my performance."

Finally, he teamed up with Huaidong Tang to defeat Abhinav Manota and Jack Wang of New Zealand in the men's doubles round of 16.

The second seeds narrowly won the first set 26-24 before the underdogs ran away with the deciding two sets 21-14 and 21-16.

There were no major upsets to be had in the women's singles as the top three seeds all advanced.

Australian Tiffany Ho beat New Zealand's Caragh Alley 21-7, 21-10, while fellow Australian Louisa Ma was awarded a walkover victory over Courtney Trillo of New Zealand.

Kai Qi Teof, also of Australia, downed Dgenyva Matauli of New Caledonia 21-9, 21-12.

The action is set to continue tomorrow with the singles, men's doubles, and women's doubles semi-finals and the mixed doubles quarter-finals.
