The United States claimed the first freestyle title at the Bakuriani 2023 Freestyle Ski, Snowboard and Freeski World Championships by winning the aerials mixed team event.

Ashley Caldwell, Chris Lillis and Quinn Dehlinger put together a performance that no other team could match as China earned silver and Ukraine took home the bronze.

After the strong winds which had made training testing in the previous two days the weather was calm today and the crowd in Georgia was treated to an epic show in this International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS) event.

The United States led in both rounds of the finals and won the competition with a final combined score of 331.37 points.

In the super final Caldwell put down a solid back full double full, while Lillis, who jumped second, came through with a near-perfect double full-full-full, keeping the United States in the lead with just one more round of jumps remaining.

Dehlinger, who recently had a first World Cup win, rose to the challenge as he put his double full-full-full down to his feet under enormous pressure, sealing the United States’ first world aerials team gold medal.

The Chinese team of Kong Fanyu, Li Tianma and Yang Longxiao, finished on 320.71 to earn its second runner-up position since the aerials team event was added to the World Championship programme in 2017.

Anastasiya Novosad moved Ukraine into second spot after the first round of the super final, but neither Oleksandr Okipnuk nor Dmytro Kotovskyi were able to land their jumps cleanly and the team settled for bronze.

Kazakhstan finished the competition in fourth, with Canada fifth.

The aerials action at the Bakuriani 2023 World Championships is due to continue on Tuesday (February 21) with qualifications for the individual event, with finals scheduled on Wednesday (February 22).
