Current and former athletes who won medals for India are set to benefit from medical insurance from the Indian Olympic Association (IOA).

The decision, taken during the IOA Executive Committee meeting held at the Olympic Bhavan in New Delhi, is also set to benefit potential medal winners.

"It was deliberated that many former players who have won medals for the country at various games are not very well off, living in constraints and not able to ensure basic healthcare," an IOA statement read.

"IOA executive council decided that IOA will be providing medical insurance at no cost to the players who have won laurels for the country.

"It was also decided that not only the former players but current players performing and having potential to win medals for the country will also be able to avail this benefit."

The first step to implement the decision according to the IOA will be to consult with National Federations (NFs).

Those recommended by the NFs would be provided medical cover.

The IOA is also looking to recruit "skilled professionals" for different departments of the body.

A new office space that represents elements of "sustainability, credibility and youth" was also planned during the Executive Committee meeting.
