Switzerland’s Mathilde Gremaud became the first competitor in freeski slopestyle history to hold the world and Olympic titles at the same time after winning the women’s competition at the World Championships in Bakuriani, Georgia.

Gremaud claimed the women’s freeski slopestyle title at the International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS) Freestyle Ski, Snowboard and Freestyle World Championships with a top score on the first run of 87.95 points.

Gremaud, who previously won slopestyle silver at the Aspen 2021 World Championships, and won two medals at Beijing 2022 including slopestyle gold, was able to enjoy a lap of honour on run two with all her rivals having come up short.

Canadian Megan Oldham gave Gremaud a scare, with the double X Games 2023 champion taking the silver medal as she finished with 87.75 points.

The podium was completed by Norway’s Johanne Killi, who has claimed gold in every Slopestyle World Cup so far this season, as she took bronze on this occasion with 84.71 points.

In the men’s freeski slopestyle competition current Olympic Big Air champion Birk Ruud of Norway took the gold with a score of 90.75 points.

Ruud, who had won four out of the five World Cup competitions he had entered this season was outside the podium positions heading into run two but nailed an impressive routine to secure top spot.

Ruud’s compatriot Christian Nummedal earned the highest overall judging scores of the competition as he took the silver medal with a score of 87.08, for the first World Championship medal of his career.

Reigning freeski slopestyle world champion Andri Ragettli of Switzerland was aiming to become the first man to defend a title in this discipline however a crash on the third jump of his second run meant he took bronze with a score of 84.33 points.

Action is scheduled to continue in Bakuriani tomorrow with men’s and women’s freeski halfpipe qualifications, as well as men’s and women’s snowboard cross finals, which have been moved forward from their scheduled date of Friday (March 3).
