She held off a late comeback to beat Ukrainian Olympic champion Olga Kharlan 15-14 in the Greek capital.

Battai looked to be cruising to victory as she was up 14-11 before Kharlan levelled the score in the blink of an eye.

However, the Hungarian held firm and eventually grabbed the crucial last point.

Tokyo 2020 individual runner-up Manon Apithy-Brunet and home favourite Theodora Gkountoura shared the third step of the podium after suffering semi-final defeats.

The Frenchwoman was humbled 15-9 by Battai while Beijing 2008 team champion Kharlan scraped past Gkountoura 15-14.

France were victorious in the team event with a resounding 45-29 victory over South Korea.

Apithy-Brunet combined with Caroline Queroli and Sara Balzer to get the better of Jeon Eun-hye, Jeon Ha-young, and Choi Se-bin.

Italians Martina Criscio, Rossella Gregorio, and Michela Battiston then did enough to beat Germany's Felice Herbon, Elisabeth Gette, and Julika Funke 45-40.

Criscio and Gette went into the final bout with Italy 40-37 up before Criscio picked up a 5-3 victory to confirm her team's place on the podium.
