João Chianca of Brazil was victorious in the men's event while American star Caitlin Simmers won on the women's side at the Rip Curl Pro Portugal round of the World Surf League.

Chianca was able to defeat Australia's Jack Robinson in the final, who was the winner of the Billabong Pro Pipeline earlier this year, as the Brazilian achieved a heat score of 17.57 to Robinson's 15.14 in the six to eight inch wave range.

Chianca had to edge past Robinson's compatriot Callum Robson in the semi-final, while Robinson had to beat another Brazilian, Yago Dora.

In the women's section, Simmers defeated her compatriot Courtney Conlogue in a tightly contested final.

Simmers had a score of 13.50, while Conlogue had 12.83.

The champion had to defeat Australia's Macy Callaghan in the semi-final, while the runner-up edged past Brazilian Tatiana Weston-Webb.

In the overall standings, Robinson leads the men's division with a total of 23,885 points, while the women's standings are lead by Molly Picklum of Australia, who has 19,490.

The World Surf League will continue in Australia, with the Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach scheduled for April 4.
