World Armwrestling Federation (WAF) President Assen Hadjitodorov has pledged his "full support" for the sport's planned debut at next year's delayed African Games in the Ghanaian capital Accra.

Representatives from the WAF and Association of African Sports Confederation (USCA) met in Egypt's capital Cairo, which is due to host next year's World Championships, to discuss the development of armwrestling on the continent.

Accra is scheduled to host the African Armwrestling and Para-armwrestling Championships from April 27 to May 5 this year, but the African Games has been postponed until March 8 to 23 next year because of economic pressures, delays in preparations and disagreements between the African Union, Association of African National Olympic Committees and USCA.

Despite the setback of the delay, Bulgarian official Hadjitodorov is confident both events in Accra will be a success.

"Regarding the organisation of the African Championships and the African Games next year, I want to confirm that we give full support from the World Armwrestling Federation," he said, as reported by the Ghanaian Times.

"We’ll deliver a high level performance of the athletes."

Hadjitodorov also thanked the UCSA for its support for growing the sport on the continent.

The African Championships is set to serve as a qualifier for Accra 2023, where 180 armwrestling athletes are expected to take part.

Armwrestling Federation of Africa (AFA) and Ghana Armwrestling Federation President Charles Osei Asibey said the AFA is collaborating with the WAF and Accra 2023 organisers to ensure the success of the African Championships.

USCA President Ahmed Nasser added that consultations have been held with Ghana's Minister of Youth and Sports Mustapha Ussif, Osei Asibey and the Organising Committee to assist preparations for Accra 2023.

Armwrestling is one of 23 sports approved on the programme for Accra 2023.

It is due to feature at this year's World Combat Games in Saudi Arabia's capital Riyadh as well.

Ghana has never previously staged the African Games, and there had been calls for the multi-sport event to be cancelled because of the country's economic crisis.
