This year's Olympic and Paralympic Week (OPW) is being held around the theme of inclusion, it has been announced, as the countdown nears 500 days until the start of next year's Games in Paris.

The annual event, which started on Monday (April 3), aims to combat disability discrimination and promote awareness of the Games, its athletes, and sports among young people.

In total, more than 7,000 schools and institutions are due to be involved with one million students taking part.

Paris 2024 is due to celebrate 500 days until the start of the Paralympic Games on April 16.

"With 500 days to go before the first Summer Paralympic Games in France, we have chosen to dedicate this year's OPW to a theme that is important to us: inclusion," said Paris 2024 President Tony Estanguet.

"With 21.8 per cent of discrimination related to disability, it is crucial to fight against stereotypes and misconceptions from an early age."

The initiative began in 2017 and was launched in partnership with the Ministry of National Education, Youth and Sports.

It looks to provide opportunities to utilise sport's educational potential to support teaching.

The primary goal is to raise students' awareness of Olympic and Paralympic values while promoting different sports in the Games.

It also aims to make a positive change on young people's perceptions of disability.

"This week will illustrate the reality of the inclusive school, through more than 3,000 projects led by teaching teams across France, in collaboration with the Paris 2024 organising committee and our athletes," said France's Minister of National Education and Youth Pap Ndiaye.

"With an adapted education system, we guarantee the 430,000 students with disabilities in schools the ability to learn and be assessed at the baccalaureate like all other students in France.

"During physical education classes in secondary school, we offer all students the opportunity to discover Para sports, now available in official programmes, with the aim to change their perspective on disability."

The Paris 2024 Paralympic Games are set to take place from August 28 to September 8 after the Olympics run from July 26 to August 11.
