Haifa's Romema Sports Arena has been confirmed as the host venue for the European Sambo Championships which are set to take place in the Israeli city from April 19 to 23.

The venue is multi-purpose and serves as the home arena for basketball teams Hapoel Haifa and Maccabi Haifa.

It also regularly stages other events such as hockey matches and concerts.

The upcoming Championships, which are also due to feature events for various different youth age groups, is the first time the arena is set to serve as host.

The medals for the competition have also been unveiled.

Each of the gold, silver and bronze medals feature the logo of the tournament on the front, the logo of the European Sambo Federation on the back, and five holes in the shape of stars at the bottom.

The Championships are due to begin with three men's weight categories and four women's on day one before the remaining classes are decided the next day, making up seven in total for men and women.

The junior, cadet and youth bouts will then occupy the schedule for the remaining three days.

The Romema Sports Arena was opened in 1976 before renovations were carried out in 2011 and 2012 at the cost of $17 million (£13.5 million/€15.5 million).

The upgrades included a new atrium, cafes, television screens and a full hall remodel.

The seating capacity was also doubled from its original 2,500 total.

It is owned by the municipality of Haifa and managed by Athos Limited, which is also fully owned by the municipality.
