Azerbaijan's athletes starred on the first day of the European Wrestling Championships in Croatia's capital Zagreb, reaching the final in three of the five men's freestyle competitions.

Two-time European champion and Tokyo 2020 Olympic silver medallist at 65 kilograms Haji Aliyev was competing in the higher weight category of 70kg for Azerbaijan, but reached the final at the Arena Zagreb with a 4-1 win against Moldova's Vasile Diacon.

Ramazan Ramazanov of Bulgaria is set to be his opponent in tomorrow's final after thrashing Ukraine's Ihor Nykyforuk 14-4 in the semi-final.

Defending champion Magomedkhan Magomedov also reached a final for Azerbaijan, winning his 97kg semi-final 6-0 against Hungary's Vladislav Baitcaev.

Givi Matcharashvili is set to face Magomedov in the final in a battle between the two bronze medallists at last year's World Championships after the Georgian notched an impressive 9-1 victory against Ukraine's Murazi Mchedlidze.

Aliabbas Rzazade was the other Azerbaijani finalist, securing his second consecutive appearance in the 57kg decider with a 12-8 triumph over Italy's Simone Piroddu.

Süleyman Atlı of Turkey, a two-time European champion, is also into the final following a decisive 13-1 win against Georgia's Roberti Dingashvili.

In the other two weight categories held today, Vazgen Tevanyan of Armenia and Mikyay Naim of Bulgaria reached the 65kg final with semi-final wins 12-4 against Ukraine's Erik Arushanian and 7-0 against Romania's Ștefan Coman respectively.

Each of the five finals are set to be held tomorrow in Zagreb.
