Three European applications for the 2029 International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS) Alpine World Ski Championships have been submitted, but there is only one candidate for Nordic and Ski Flying World Championships in the same year.

Narvik in Norway, Soldeu in Andorra and Val Gardena in Italy are the three resorts in contention for the biennial Alpine World Ski Championships in six years' time.

Norway has not hosted the event since it formed part of the Oslo 1952 Winter Olympics, while Andorra has never done so.

Narvik and Soldeu are staging a second attempt to secure an Alpine World Ski Championships, while Val Gardena is a first-time candidate.

Italy has held six independent World Championships, most recently in Cortina d'Ampezzo in 2021.

Soldeu held last season's Alpine Ski World Cup Finals, with Val Gardena a stop on the men's circuit.

Narvik hosted the Alpine Ski Europa Cup Finals in March.

Saalbach in Austria and Crans-Montana in Switzerland have already been lined up by the FIS as hosts for the 2025 and 2027 World Championships respectively.

The event has not been held outside Europe since 2015 in Vail and Beaver Creek in the United States.

For the 2029 Nordic World Ski Championships, Lahti in Finland is the only candidate to host the event for what would be its eighth time.

Lahti last held the World Championships in 2017, and no resort has held it more than its seven occasions.

Trondheim in Norway and Falun in Sweden are the scheduled hosts for 2025 and 2027 respectively.

Another regular host is the sole candidate for the 2029 Ski Flying World Championships, with Planica in Slovenia seeking to stage the event for an eighth time.

It most recently held the Ski Flying World Championships in 2020, and staged this year's Nordic World Ski Championships.

Bad Mitterndorf in Austria and Oberstdorf in Germany are poised to host upcoming Ski Flying World Championships in 2024 and 2026.

Each of the candidates is required to submit a detailed concept to the FIS by August 1 by filling out a questionnaire, followed by a formal meeting with the FIS Inspection Group for each of the hopefuls before the end of 2023 to finalise their bids.

The questionnaire and reports are set to be distributed to National Federations, Technical Committee chairs and the FIS Council in April 2024.

Final presentations to the FIS Council are scheduled for June 4 next year at the Congress in Iceland's capital Reykjavik.

The Council is due to take the final decision on hosts for the FIS World Championships.

Concerns remain over the future of winter sports given the increasing impact of climate change.

The International Olympic Committee has delayed the selection of a host for the 2030 Winter Olympics and Paralympics, and is considering a system of permanent rotating hosts for its quadrennial multi-sport event.
