Organisers of last year's delayed Islamic Solidarity Games in Konya and the men's FIFA World Cup in Qatar have been praised at the Islamic Solidarity Sports Federation (ISSF) Extraordinary General Assembly in Jeddah.

The Extraordinary General Assembly was staged at the Intercontinental Hotel in the Saudi city with the intention of approving the session of the 11th General Assembly staged in Konya last year, the report from the Games in the Turkish city, financial and administrative reports and statute amendments.

The fifth edition of the Islamic Solidarity Games in Konya was originally due to be held in 2021, but was twice postponed to August 2022 to avoid a clash with the delayed 2020 Olympics in Tokyo and because of COVID-19-related issues.

Konya 2021 featured more than 4,000 athletes from 54 countries, and officials praised organisers for their staging the event at the Extraordinary General Assembly.

Qatar is one of 57 member nations of the ISSF, and became the first to host the men's football World Cup last year.

The tournament proved highly controversial because of the disputed 2010 bidding process, the switch from traditional dates in the northern hemisphere's summer to the winter because of Qatar's heat and humidity, and heavy criticism of the host nation's human rights record including its treatment of migrant workers on World Cup projects.

But Qatar was commended for its "outstanding organisation" of the tournament and Morocco on becoming the first African and Arab nation to reach the World Cup semi-finals at the Extraordinary General Assembly.

Qatar's capital Doha has already been awarded the 2034 Asian Games, with Saudi capital Riyadh receiving the 2030 edition in the 2020 vote.

Saudi Arabia led de facto blockade of and severed relations with Qatar during a diplomatic crisis beginning in June 2017, but a resolution was found in January 2021.

At the ISSF Extraordinary General Assembly, ISSF President Prince Abdulaziz Bin Turki Al Faisal, also Saudi Arabia's Sports Minister and National Olympic and Paralympic Committee President, offered condolences to the victims of the devastating earthquakes in Turkey and Syria in February, which killed nearly 60,000 people.

Jordan Olympic Committee secretary general Nasser Majali's appointment to the same role with the ISSF was approved.

The Extraordinary General Assembly also awarded this year's General Assembly in August to Riyadh.

Prince Al Faisal thanked Saudi King Salman and de facto ruler Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

The bin Salman regime has faced criticism for what many perceive as sportswashing through major investments and the staging of events in an attempt to distract from its record on human rights.

The next Islamic Solidarity Games are due to be held in Cameroon's capital Yaoundé, which would make it the first edition not held in a Muslim-majority nation.
