Major League Baseball (MLB) Together, a new platform that aims to celebrate the power the sport has to unite communities, has been launched.

MLB Together is expected to champion the sport’s principles of community engagement, non-profit partnerships, social impact and volunteering, and will also feature a new mental health and wellness initiative for young people.

Three-time MLB All Star Liam Hendriks, who currently plays for the Chicago White Sox, and underwent treatment for non-Hodgkin lymphoma earlier this year, has been named as an ambassador for the MLB Together project.

Hendriks, who represented Australia in the 2009 World Baseball Classic, announced last month that he was cancer free.

Among the initiatives currently championed by the MLB Together platform are raising awareness of breast cancer and prostate cancer, MLB Green, which recognises sustainability efforts and military appreciation.

The MLB Together platform also features a mental health and wellbeing section, which includes details of a partnership between the MLB and Crisis Text Line, a text-based mental health service.

The platform operates within seven pillars - youth empowerment, diversity, equity and inclusion, domestic and physical safety, health research and resources, military, family and veteran resources, disaster relief and MLB Green.

"MLB Together represents the very best of what our sport means to our fans and our communities," said MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred.

"Baseball's ability to bring people together through shared values and addressing common causes has helped secure the game's status within our culture.

"We look forward to working with our clubs, partners, players and fans to make a meaningful community impact through the MLB Together platform."
