The top seeds continued to impress as the second-round of singles action concluded today at the World Table Tennis Championships Finals in Durban.

Men’s singles second seed Chuqin Wang was among the winners, dropping one game against Shunsuke Togami of Japan as he triumphed 11-3, 11-3, 11-3, 6-11, 11-6.

Fourth seed Tomokazu Harimoto of Japan produced a comfortable win beating Marcos Freitas of Portugal 12-10, 11-8, 11-9, 12-10.

Seventh seed Gaoyuan Lin of China also won without dropping a game, as he swept past Daniel Habesohn of Austria 11-3, 11-7, 11-6, 11-4.

On a good day for the higher-ranked players, eighth seed Lin Yun-Ju of Chinese Taipei was also a straight games winner, beating Egypt’s Mohamed El-Beiali 11-6, 11-8, 11-9, 11-8.

It was the same story for ninth seed Dang Qiu of Germany, who overcame India’s Sathiyan Gnanasekaran 11-6, 11-6, 11-5, 11-7.

The biggest upset of the day in the men’s draw came as world number 174 Mihai Bobocica of Italy sensationally beat world number 36 Simon Gauzy of France in a contest that went the distance.

Games one, six and seven were decided by just two points, with Bobocica defying the rankings and earning the upset courtesy of a 9-11, 11-8, 5-11, 7-11, 11-8, 14-12, 11-9 victory.

In the women’s draw, second seed Manyu Wang of China cruised through to the third-round, beating Hana Matelova of the Czech Republic 11-3, 11-4, 11-5, 11-7.

Wang’s compatriot Yidi Wang also advanced in straight games, defeating Maria Xiao of Spain 11-5, 11-3, 11-4, 11-3.

Fifth seed Xingtong Chen of China also progressed, overcoming Zion Lee of South Korea 11-9, 11-4, 10-12, 11-6, 11-6.

Japan’s Mima Ito, who seeded seven is the highest ranked player in the women’s singles draw outside of China, cruised through her match with France’s Camille Lutz, winning 11-4, 11-4, 11-3, 11-2.

Japan’s Hina Hiyata was also a straight games winner, with the tenth seed overcoming Giorgia Piccolin 11-7, 11-4, 11-2, 11-8.

Elsewhere in the women’s draw, Jia Nan Yuan of France won a match-up of veteran players, with the 16th seed beating Barbora Balazova of Slovakia 11-9, 11-6, 11-7, 9-11, 5-11, 11-7.

Meanwhile Puerto Rico’s Adriana Diaz ended the run of Croatia’s Ivana Malobabic, who caused a big upset in the opening round against Slovenia's Ana Tofant, winning 14-12, 11-1, 9-11, 11-4, 11-5.

Singles action at the Durban International Convention Centre is set to move to the round-of-32 stage tomorrow.
