Among the items sold was a signed jersey worn by his legendary team-mate Michael Jordan during the semi-final victory against Lithuania, which sold for $3.003 million (£2.432 million/€2.798 million).

Jordan's game-worn shoes from the pre-Olympics Tournament of the Americas netted $420,000 (£340,000/€391,000).

Semi-final jerseys for Larry Bird and Magic Johnson sold at $360,000 (£292,000/€335,000) and $336,000 (£272,000/€313,000) respectively.

Items from Malone and his other Barcelona 1992 team-mates - Christian Laettner, David Robinson, Patrick Ewing, Larry Bird, Scottie Pippen, Clyde Drexler, John Stockton, Chris Mullin, Charles Barkley and Magic Johnson - were also sold.

Malone partnered with Goldin's founder and executive chairman Ken Goldin to sell the collection.

"It was truly remarkable to have been able to work with Karl Malone himself to offer this iconic collection to fans everywhere," Goldin said, as reported by ESPN.

"Now a lucky few own a piece of revolutionary sports history from some of the greatest players of all time."

The Dream Team was the first American men's basketball Olympic side to feature active professionals from the National Basketball Association.

It is considered by many to be the greatest team in the sport's history, and was collectively inducted into the US Olympic Hall of Fame in 2009 and International Basketball Federation Hall of Fame in 2017.

The US beat Croatia 117-85 in the final to take gold at Barcelona 1992.

Malone was also a member of the team who defended their Olympic title at Atlanta 1996.
