The Government of Slovenia has pledged an extra €2.8 million (£2.4 million/$2.9 million) to help organise the Maribor 2023 European Youth Olympic Festival (EYOF).

The decision was made as Prime Minister Robert Golob and Minister of Economy, Tourism and Sports Matjaž Han signed a contract to co-finance construction of a warm-up track at the Poljane Athletics Stadium.

"Maribor is one of the most sporting Slovenian cities in spirit and actions," Prime Minister Golob said.

"That is why the government’s decision to support the EYOF organization was not difficult.

"Today, by handing over the decisions, we also confirmed this.

"I would like to thank everyone who participated, as it is a big matter for Maribor and Slovenia.

"The whole of Slovenia can be proud of the fact that EYOF will be in Maribor, as in the past it has repeatedly proven itself to be an excellent organizer of sports events at the highest level.

"I wish our sportsmen and women to achieve top results and at the same time forge friendships with other athletes from all over Europe.

"Congratulations on the work so far and positive forward!"

The latest investment means the state has contributed almost €9 million (£7.7 million/$9.6 million) for the event so far.

A little over €6 million (£5.1 million/$6.4 million) was set aside for sports infrastructure so far while nearly €3 million (£2.5 million/$3.2 million) was allocated for the organisation of the event.

The Government of Slovenia believes the EYOF will bring "numerous advantages" for Maribor and the entire country.

"At the Government of the Republic of Slovenia, we are aware of the significance of large sporting events for the promotion of Slovenia, its economy and tourism," Han said.

"That is why I am happy that together, with the support of the Prime Minister, we secured additional funds for the organization of EYOF.

"Because this is not just an ordinary sports event, it is an event that will attract young people to Slovenia, so that they will get to know its beauties, socialize and spread positive energy.

"I think this is an investment in the future."

Maribor 2023 is scheduled to take place from July 23 to 29.

Italy hosted the Winter EYOF in Friuli-Venezia Giulia from January 21 to 28 earlier this year.
