Network_TenMarch 21 - The exclusive Australian broadcast rights to this year's International Sailing Federation (ISAF) Sailing World Championships in Perth have been won by Network Ten.

Featuring 1,400 of the world's top sailors, the Championships are the biggest event in the 2011 international sailing calendar and will be held from December 3 to 18 off the Fremantle coast.

Around 850 boats from 80 nations are competing in 10 Olympic sailing classes and an estimated 75 per cent of Australia's Olympic competitors will be decided.

Network Ten's broadcast will include 30 hours of coverage featuring live racing as well as daily highlight packages of the action on and off the shore.

Perth2011 event director John Longley described the Network Ten agreement as a huge boost to sailing in Australia.

"Sports lovers around the country will have the opportunity to follow the excitement of live sailing, the fortunes of individual Australian and international athletes and to see and feel the buzz that this event is bringing to Perth," he said.

The latest technology advances will bring a new and exciting edge to Network Ten's television coverage.

Electronic positioning graphically plots the progress of the boats around the course and on-deck cameras will provide viewers with a crew's eye view.

Executive director of Eventscorp, David van Ooran, said: "This is an exciting outcome for the state as it will showcase Western Australia as an extraordinary sailing destination to a national audience."

In addition to Network Ten's Australian coverage, the Championships are being televised internationally from a broadcast centre at Fremantle's Bathers Bay.
