The sport's proposed move to Wembley was intended to make room for badminton and rhythmic gymnastics at the ExCel Arena and save the cost of building a £40 million temporary venue for the Games.
 

But, as insidethgames reported yesterday, the London 2012 Board have now backed down from the controversial proposals following objections from the world governing body, the AIBA, the BABA and the British Olympic Association.

Derek Mapp, the chairman of the BABA, told insidethegames: “Ensuring that boxing is located at the heart of the 2012 Olympics is good for boxing and good for the Games. 
 

“The original plan was for boxing to be at the ExCel Arena and we are pleased that things are now progressing on this basis."
 

Traditionally Britain have had a good record at recent Olympic Games with high profile names such as Audley Harrison, Amir Khan and James DeGale all claiming medals and Mapp believes the sport and its competitors will continue to inspire future generations, particularly in London.
 
He said: “Boxing has a proven track record of inspiring and connecting with people in the most socially excluded communities and we believe that it will be a central element of helping the 2012 Olympics to deliver a sporting legacy.”
