The 25-year-old from Brasilia tested positive for testosterone in May 2006 during her national championships and failed another test on the eve of the 2007 Pan-American Games in Rio de Janeiro where she won four medals, including gold in the 50 and 100 metres freestyle.
 

During the same Games, the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) became suspicious of a control she underwent and a DNA test showed that the urine sample she had submitted was not hers and she was stripped of all her medals.
 

FINA, the world governing body, suspended Gusmao for two years after the first failed test before ordering a lifetime ban in September 2008, which she appealed against.

A statement from the CAS said: "The Court of Arbitration for Sport has rendered its final decision in the cases concerning the Brazilian swimmer Rebecca Braga Gusmao.

 

"The CAS has confirmed the decisions taken by FINA Doping Panels on 12 May 2008, 17 July 2008 and 3 September 2008, in the last of which, Ms Gusmao was declared ineligible to compete for life."
