January 25 - An impressive 88 per cent of the German public support Munich's bid to host the 2018 Winter Olympics, a new independent survey carried out by global market research firm Ipsos claims.

The study, which involved 3,000 people in Germany, also found that over 87 per cent of those polled expressed support for the involvement of companies in sponsoring the bid, despite the global financial downturn.

Munich 2018 has already managed to attract major global brands such as BMW, Adidas and Deloitte.

Willy Bogner, the chief executive of Munich 2018, said: "This is a very pleasing survey for Munich 2018 at such an early stage of our campaign.

"However, there is a long way to go and we will work hard to continue explaining the major benefits of the Games to the people of Munich and Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Bavaria and all of Germany so that we can continue to enjoy this excellent support."

Munich’s bid to host the 2018 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games reflects the region’s enduring affinity with winter sports, Bogner claimed.

The supporting theme of the bid is its meticulous attention to detail on environmental prosperity, he added.

Annecy and Pyeongchang are also bidding for the Games.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) are due to make their decision at their Session in Durban on July 6, 2011.
