March 29 - A draft environmental and sustainability concept to ensure that Munich hosts an  environmentally positive and sustainable Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games in 2018 if their bid is successful has been approved.



The Munich bid is founded on solid ecological principles, officials claim, and members of the Bid Committee’s Technical Commission for the Environment were unanimous in their approval of a concept which prioritises protection of nature, climate protection, development of sustainable sports and regional development and sustainable education programmes.

Approval of the concept is a key milestone in the development of the Munich bid and underpins the overall concept, officials claimed.

Bernard Schwank, the managing director of the Munich 2018 Bid Committee, was delighted by the decision.

He said: "We have now laid the foundations for an eco-friendly, sustainable Olympic and Paralympic Winter Gamers in Munich.

"I would like to thank members of the Technical Commission for the Environment for their constructive work on the concept."

Work to develop the approved draft concept will continue ahead of the unveiling of the full and detailed plans at a press conference in early June.

Munich is one of three bidders for the 2018 Games, along with Annecy and Pyeongchang.
 
The International Olympic Committee will announce the winner at Session in Durban on July 6, 2011.
