June 19 - Munich is planning to hold a special celebration event in the Marienplatz next Tuesday (June 22) to mark the official announcement by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) of which cities will be put through to the next stage of bidding for the 2018 Olympics and Paralympics.

Munich will be hoping to be forward as a Candidate City along with rivals Annecy and Pyeongchang.

A live feed from Lausanne will beam the IOC ruling Executive Board’s announcement onto a huge screen in the historic square.

The show starts with movies, trailers and live music celebrating Munich’s sports, cultural and ecological assets.

People from all over the region will then be able to watch live interviews and reaction from the Munich 2018 Bid Committee chief executive Willy Bogner and his colleagues before, during and after the announcement.

Bogner said: "I invite everyone to join us at the Marienplatz on Tuesday in anticipation of the IOC’s decision.

"If we become a Candidate City, we want to celebrate with all the friendliness and enthusiasm that makes our region so special."

The show will continue with speeches from the Mayor of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Thomas Schmid, and a number of the Munich 2018 Bid’s sports ambassadors, including three time Olympic champion Georg Hackl.

Should Munich be successful, the German national football team will also send their congratulations from South Africa.

Bogner said: "This is an exciting time for the Munich 2018 Bid Committee, and for the whole region.

"Now is the time for us to demonstrate our passion for winter sports that has made Germany one of the most successful winter sports nations ever, and to show that traditional strongholds like Bavaria remain the lifeblood of the winter sports movement."
