do-you-know
that insidethegames.biz will be speaking to every team competing at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games?

Our magazine editor Dan Palmer is aiming to interview the Chef de Mission from all 72 of the countries and territories which will take part in the English city from July 28 to August 8 this year.

The project is well underway and nearly 50 interviews have already been published on insidethegames.biz.

These pieces tell the fascinating stories of the Commonwealth and highlight how diverse the membership is.

Read about the pro-Commonwealth feeling in the Falkland Islands, where the bowls team sets up in a school corridor.

The Anguilla Chef de Mission is former cricket star Cardigan Connor, while Eswatini will be competing under the country’s new name for the first time following the change from Swaziland.

In Wales there are hopes that the country’s big stars will appear at the Games, and the British Virgin Islands Chef de Mission Mark Chapman recalls the territory’s emotional gold medal at Gold Coast 2018.

The interview with Bermuda led to a discussion about rum, while we have learnt about St Helena’s epic sea voyage to Glasgow 2014.

Some teams have named former athletes as their Chef de Mission, including Gibraltar's triathlete Chris Walker who recalled racing in front of a packed multi-storey car park at Manchester 2002.

Singapore's Lim Heem Wei won a gymnastics silver medal on the balance beam in Glasgow, and Dominica's Woody Lawrence, a swimmer, was the first to represent the island in any sport at the Olympic Games.

The Tuvalu Chef de Mission discussed training on the country’s runway and the perils of climate change, while we have discussed the impact of volcanoes in Montserrat and St Vincent and the Grenadines.

Keep checking our countries and territories page for more Chef de Mission interviews in the lead-up to the Games.
