The IWAS World Games have opened in StadskanaalSeptember 16 - Paul DePace, President of the International Wheelchair Amputee and Sports Federation (IWAS), has opened the organisation's fourth World Games in Stadskanaal as athletes gear up for the first day of competitive action tomorrow.

At the Opening Ceremony, which took place at the Pagendal Sports Complex in the Dutch town, host of last year's International Paralympic Committee (IPC) European Athletics Championships, DePace welcomed the 380 athletes and officials from 26 countries assembled at "this unique sporting event".

He added that he "looked forward to them displaying their talents, sportsmanship and ensuring good communication through sport between all the nations competing".

Athletes, including the likes of Beijing 2008 long jump silver medallist Atsushi Yamamoto of Japan and Estonian Paralympic swimming bronze medal winner Kardo Ploomipuu, will compete in athletics, swimming and archery over the five days of events at the Games.
