St Pierre Joseph of Mauritius took on Turkeys Yildirim Avni on day three of the World Boxing Championships in AlmatyOctober 16 - Germany's Serge Michel got off to a rocky start on day three of the World Boxing Championships in Almaty, edging past Georgia's Lago Kiziria.

After the shocks and upsets of yesterday's action, things returned to normal with the big names stamping their mark on the competition.

That is not to say it was an easy ride for these athletes as World Series of Boxing (WSB) star Michel found out.

The German went toe to toe with Kiziria in the light heavyweight division.

Michel found out early on that Kiziria was not the type of boxer to back down and by round three there was nothing to separate the two fighters.

With a minute-and-a-half to go in the bout, it took an almighty effort from Michel to keep his aggression alive with both boxers looking almost burnt out.

This superior aggression seemed to be the deciding factor for the judges who gave the victory to Michel.

The Season III German Eagles boxer would certainly have hoped for an easier first round but now looks to improve and step it up for his next fight.

"The first fight is always difficult and the opponent was also very good. He was very hard to box against," said Michel

"We are going to have to go through and take a look at what happened during that fight and eradicate the mistakes."

Welterweight Carl Hield, from the International Boxing Association's (AIBA) Road to Dream programme, started his Championships off against Scotland's Lewis Benson.

The boxer from the Bahamas seemed sluggish in the first round with Benson making good use of the ring, dancing round his opponent and clipping him with jabs.

Things changed in the second with Hield brushing off his earlier nerves and causing the Scot some real problems.

Hields went from strength to strength as the bout progressed and deservedly took the win come the end of the third round.

"I had a slow start to the fight but I picked up after the first round when I started to get warm," he said.

"AIBA really made me who I am today because I've been to all the 'Road to' training camps.

"Italy, Baku, Wales...And now I'm here.

"It's helping me because I'm the only elite boxer in my country, so I don't get decent sparring, and the training facilities are really bad so thanks to the AIBA programme I was able to come here two weeks before, get good time with other countries and get a good training programme."

Georgia's Zaal Kvachatadze looks like one of the standout boxers in the welterweight division after his win over Sri Lanka's Tharindu Gedara.

It did not take long for him to find his range and after initially feeling his opponent out he began landed some explosive shots, dropping the Sri Lankan with a body shot with 83 seconds left of the first round.

Gedara fought bravely on but it was not long before Kvachatadze had him on the canvas again landing an enormous left hook to the body.

The referee had seen enough after that and gave the victory to the Georgian WSB fighter with just five seconds left of the first round.

Two of the best bouts of the day came from all Asian affairs with Hyeongkyu Kim of South Korea facing off against Aolin Zhang of China in the light heavyweight division and Mongolian Tuvshinbat Byamba taking on China's Qiong Maimaitituersun at welterweight.

In his fight against Zhang, Kim was firing off his jab from an unusually low position making it extremely difficult for him to spot his punches.

Zhang was attacking the Korean in bursts, surging at his opponent who was more than willing to welcome him in.

Kim's low hand positioning caused him some defensive mishaps at times as he only had his right hand as cover.

Despite this, Kim was able to drop Zhang with 50 seconds left on the clock, proving to be the decisive moment and earning him the victory.

Byamaba proved to be a crowd favourite, coming out on top against Maimaitituersun.

Byamaba pleased the Kazakh audience as he threw everything he had at Maimaitituersun, pushing forward at every opportunity.

Maimaitituersun did well to stay on his feet and showed the world that he was no push over, despite Byamaba's constant bombardment.

In the end Byamaba had to settle for a clear 3:0 victory but looked to be another Mongolian with a knockout punch in his locker.
