Ivan and Nadiia Sivak have been named IPC Athletes of the Month ©getty ImagesJanuary 21 - Double world title winners Nadiia and Ivan Sivak, who won gold in both the duo Latin and duo standard class two events at the 2013 International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Wheelchair Dance Sport World Championships in Tokyo, have been named the IPC Athletes of the Month for December.

The Ukrainian duo, who happen to be husband and wife, achieved a perfect score for their Tango at the Championships, which were held at the Tokyo 1964 Olympic Park, but claim to favour no dance more than another.

"We consider all dances that lead us to the victory to be the best ones," said the couple.

"Step by step we improve everything that we already know and can do and keep learning more about this magnificent art of dancing."

The pair received 48 per cent of the public vote in order to win the award, fending off competition from Russian Nordic skier Alena Kaufman, Chinese wheelchair fencer Jing Rong, Algerian goalball player Mokrane Mohamed and German alpine skier Andrea Rothfuss.

The Sivak's have been dancing together since 2007, finishing fourth in their first European Championships in Warsaw, Poland.

They married in 2009 on the International Day of Dance, but they do not see their closeness as giving them an edge over their competitors.

"Feelings during trainings and competitions are always different and diverse - a storm of feelings that we try to show with our bodies and emotions," they said.

"Maybe that is what helps us to dance but it is not always like this."
