In a plea to the public, the Australian Paralympic Committee (APC) has launched a new fundraising scheme called, "Believe".

The idea of the fundraiser is for the Australian public to show their belief in their Paralympic athletes by donating money which will help send teams and athletes to the Games in Russia and Brazil.

The chief executive of the APC, Jason Helwig, has aimed to raise $200,000 (£106,000/€130,000) which may seem ambitious, but he has expressed his desire to match the target to aid his athletes.

"There's no doubt we're aiming high but we're no strangers to determination and sheer hard work," he said.

"We have every confidence that our athletes can go all the way and we promise to do our all to get them there - but we need Australia's help."

The campaign is being driven by six star Australian Paralympians, wheelchair racer Kurt Fearnley, swimmers Ahmed Kelly Jess Aungles, skier Victoria Pendergast, cyclist Alexandra Green and rugby player Chris Bond.

These six competitors will aim to raise awareness so they can compete at Sochi 2014 and for their summer counterparts in Rio 2016.

Pendergast has expressed her gratitude to the public for enabling her to live her dream.

"Alpine skiing has taken me to amazing places, made me a stronger person and provided me with a passion I love," she said.

"Without the public's donations to the APC, my skiing career wouldn't have been possible.

"I'm extremely appreciative of the belief that people put in me every day and I will be putting my all into representing my country and doing Australia proud at Sochi."
