The American is leaving because of "personal circumstances" and plans to take up over a non-event role overseas that will be officially announced in the next few weeks.

News of Speer's departure was circulated to key Glasgow 2014 stakeholders today.

He will officially leave Glasgow 2014 next Wednesday (April 30).

Speer had joined Glasgow 2014 in November 2012 shortly after the end of the Olympics and Paralympics in London where he had been the client services manager.

Prior to joining London 2012 he had spent much of his career in Australia, including having worked as general manager sales and commercial for the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games.

"Ty has led a successful commercial programme and his knowledge and experience have been great assets to the Organising Committee," said David Grevemberg, the Glasgow 2014 chief executive.

"Glasgow 2014 will be a world-class sporting and cultural celebration and it's our ambition to make them the greatest Games the Commonwealth has ever staged.

"I thank Ty for his contribution to the Organising Committee and, on behalf of the winning Glasgow 2014 team, wish him every success for the future."

The Atlanta-born Speer, a graduate of Duke University in North Carolina, had spearheaded the successful Glasgow 2014 commercial programme which has raised more £100 million ($168 million/€121 million) having attracted sponsorship from a range of blue-chip and international brands including BP, Ford, SSE, and Virgin Media.

In addition, in its launch phase Glasgow 2014's ticketing programme saw more than 2.3 million requests for up to one million tickets generating unprecedented public demand.

Speer claimed that he had been discussing his departure with Grevemberg and Lord Smith, chairman of Glasgow 2014, for several months having achieved his goal of raising £100 million in sponsorship.

"It's clear from the commitment shown both from businesses and the public that Glasgow 2014 is generating real excitement and creating fantastic opportunities around showcasing world-class sport from Glasgow and Scotland on the global stage," said Speer.

"I'm delighted to have led a commercial programme which has exceeded £100 million in revenues, which is a real vote of confidence in the ability of the city and Scotland to put on a great Games.

"David, the Organising Committee team and all Partners are focused on ensuring a memorable sports festival experience for all and it's been a real privilege to be part of a great team that I know will deliver an outstanding Commonwealth Games."
