With the help of its Official Legal Advisors Harper Macleod, Glasgow 2014 has appointed 17 solicitors' firms and barristers' chambers and 19 individual solicitors, advocates and barristers.

These legal professionals will provide a "safety net" for those who do not have their own legal representatives in place in Scotland and who may have difficulty in identifying representation at short notice by providing free legal advice and representation for accredited athletes, coaches, team officials, Commonwealth Games Associations, International Federations and National Federations.

"Glasgow 2014's Pro Bono Legal Advice and Representation Service is delighted to welcome the support of representatives of the legal profession in Scotland and across the UK," said Glasgow 2014 chief executive David Grevemberg.

"The members will undoubtedly provide a high-quality service to athletes and officials at Games time."

The appointed legal representatives are due to work for the period between July 8 and August 6.

They were selected by a committee made up of The Law Society of Scotland, the Faculty of Advocates and legal representatives with a background in sports law.

Glasgow 2014 said those appointed were selected from a group of around 100 applicants.

"Whilst I didn't doubt we would have the talent, experience and enthusiasm available in the legal profession for this service, the committee members and I are delighted that so many excellent lawyers have made themselves available to commit their own time and work for the benefit of the Games," said Austin Lafferty, chairman of the Pro Bono Management Committee.

"We have solicitors, advocates and barristers for every day and hour, and for every potential legal problem that may arise."

A general service covering seven areas of law is to be offered along with a sports advocacy service for athletes who may appear before the ad-hoc division of the Court of Arbitration for Sport which sits during the period of the Games.

Sport Resolutions, the independent dispute resolution service for sport in the United Kingdom, is set to act as the secretariat for the Pro Bono Legal Advice and Representation Service throughout the Games, undertaking the day-to-day administration and operation.
