Hungary and Slovenia claim double swimming success on third day of Tbilisi 2015 European Youth Olympic Festival

Hungary and Slovenia secured double gold in the New Tbilisi Swimming Pool on the third day of competition at the 2015 European Youth Olympic Festival (EYOF) in Georgia's capital.

Slovenia’s successes came in back to back races as Janja Jamsek claimed the narrowest of victories in the girl's 200 metres backstroke final as her time of 2min 16.75sec was just 0.09 seconds faster than the runner-up, Moldova's Tatiana Salcutan.

Jamsek’s triumph had come moments after Janja Segal had sprinted to the girl's 100m freestyle gold, the 14-year-old touching home in 56.72sec to deny Ajna Evelin Kesely a third title at the festival, the Hungarian finishing in 57.13.

Kesely was not to be denied for long, as having earned gold in the 800m freestyle and 200m butterfly events in consecutive days in Tbilisi, she completed her hat-trick, clinching the 400m freestyle crown with another impressive display.

Kesely posted a time of 4:15.65 to hold off the challenge of Ireland’s Antoinette Neamt and Britain’s Annalea Claire Davison, who completed the podium with times of 4:16.61 and 4:19.33 respectively.

A second Hungarian gold in the pool was claimed in the final event of the evening session as Fanni Gyurinovics touched home in 2:18.93 to take the 200m individual medley crown ahead of Germany’s Yara Sophie Hierath, the runner-up in 2:19.56.

In the corresponding boy's event, Germany’s Johannes Hintze held off the challenge of Hugo Gonzalez De Oliveira to take the victory in 2:02.52, with his Spanish rival touching home 0.33sec behind to take the silver medal and Russia’s Evgenii Somov claimed bronze.

The final two events in the pool of the day saw Italy’s Nicolo Martinenghi win the boy's 200m breaststroke event in 2:15.14.

The Netherland’s Nyls Korsanje, meanwhile, became the 50m freestyle champion with his time of 23.75 seeing him finish ahead of Ukraine’s Oleksandr Moroz and Hungary’s Istvan Vegh.

The only athletics action on the track on the third day of the festival were the boy's and girl's 1500m races, which both went down to sprint finishes.

Ireland’s Kevin McGrath was able to hold off the challenge of Serbia’s Elzan Bibic to take the boy's gold in 4:01.11.

Serbia were also forced to settle for second in the girl's event, as The Netherlands’ Merel Van der Marel crossed home first in 4:33.98, ahead of Tamara Micevic.

Romania’s Iuliana Anitei Georgiana broke the EYOF record in the triple jump, achieving a distance of 13.50 metres,

In the second two field event of the day, Ukraine’s Dmytro Nikitin’s effort of 2.12m proved enough to win the boy's high jump.

Rare home success was secured by Robinzon Belglarishvili in the boy’s under 60 kilogram judo competition as a waza-ari proved enough for him to beat Italy’s Manuel Lombardo in the final.

The boy's under 66kg crown was claimed by Italy’s Giovanni Esposito after he defeated Ukraine’s Hievorh in the final.

France’s Coraline Marcus Tabellion defeated Germany’s Sarah Laura Herrmann to win the under 48kg girl's division.
