The contest was the pick of the day’s action as Li used her considerable height advantage to dictate proceedings, although Jang proved to be a tough opponent, counter-attacking well to keep herself in with a chance of progressing to the next round.

It was Li, however, backed by the partisan home crowd, who produced the better performance, claiming the win on two of the judges’ scorecards, with the other unable to separate the two rivals.

She will now go on to face Pooja Rani, the Indian who was a bronze medallist at Incheon 2014, in the semi-finals.

Elsewhere, there was a surprise result in the lightweight division as North Korea’s Ri Tong Sun stunned Incheon 2014 bronze medallist Luu Thi Duyen of Vietnam.

The Vietnamese was favourite going into the bout but Ri was able to breeze to what proved to be a comfortable victory, progressing to the next round in unanimous fashion.

Olympic Games bronze medallist Mavzuna Chorieva of Tajikistan maintained her excellent form at the event by beating Makhfuzakhon Ergasheva of Uzbekistan in the same weight category.

Chorieva had struggled coming into the competition but has found a new lease of life in Wulanchabu, securing a semi-final spot as all three judges’ awarded her the victory.

Nesthy Petecio of the Philippines, a World Championships silver medallist, used her speed and technique to perfection as she proved too strong for Japan's Sana Kawano with a unanimous win in the bantamweight division.

“I was not satisfied with my silver medal from the last two big events in Jeju [at the World Championships] and Singapore [at the Southeast Asian Games], so therefore I decided to prepare better for this one,” Petecio said.

“I was stronger this time, and tried to use my powerful punches from the first round.

“My Japanese opponent was an energetic and courageous fighter, and she should be a serious contender in the years to come.”

Thailand’s boxers were also in impressive form as bantamweight Peamwilai Laopeam eliminated Rano Parkhatova by split decision in a tense bout, before compatriot Tassamalee Thongjan defeated Mongolia’s Nergui Oyun-Erdene in the featherweight category.

Tomorrow provides the boxers with a rest day before the semi-finals take place on Wednesday (August 12).
