Azerbaijan’s Leyla Gurbanova continued her dominance of the women’s 52 kilograms division as she added the Cadet Wrestling World Championships title to the junior crown she won in Brazil just two weeks ago in Sarajevo.

Gurbanova began the day in sluggish form in the Bosnia and Herzegovina capital but was able to recover when it mattered, pinning Russia’s Aleksandra Nitsenko 34 seconds into the final to ensure she finished top of the podium.

The victory gave the Azerbaijani her first cadet world title and saw her bounce back from the disappointment of defeat in the final at last year’s event in Snina, Slovakia.

“I worked really hard all year and had good training with my coaches,” she said.

“Another year of experience also helped my confidence.

“I like both medals but I had stronger and older opponents in Brazil, so that makes the junior title a little more special.”

Uzbekistan’s Shakhodat Djullibaeva and Sae Nanjo of Japan both finished their respective campaigns in style, winning a bronze medal apiece.

Elsewhere, Japan’s Yui Susaki successfully defended her under 46kg crown, clinching her second successive world cadet title with a 10-0 technical  fall over American opponent Alleida Martinez.

Susaki signalled her intentions early on, going on the attack to end the bout after only two minutes.

Maria Tyumerekova of Russia comfortably beat Turkey’s Aynur Ege 9-0 in the first bronze medal match-up, before Germany’s Lisa Ersel secured the other podium place, pinning Divy Tomar of India.

Russia’s Ekaterina Mikhailova was another wrestler to claim gold by pin-fall as she needed just over a minute to beat Kazakhstan's Assyzat Sagymbay, producing a solid display to seal the under 40kg title.

The bronze medals in the category went to Belarusian Nastassia Kuryshta, who beat Japan’s Rumi Fujisawa 12-7, and Lyubov Voloshina of Ukraine, who overcame the challenge of Moldova's Maria Ciocclea.

The success continued for the Ukrainians as European under 60kg champion Anzhelika Lysak proved too strong for Maria Matyushenko of Russia, flattening her opponent with an impressive throw before she was able to seal a pin-fall triumph.

Italian Elena Esposito clinched a 5-2 success against Kazakhstan’s Anina Temirtassova to take home a bronze medal, while Sweden's Alexandra Sandahl also managed the feat, beating India’s Nisha Nisha.

Sandahl’s team-mate Denise Strom secured Sweden’s first gold medal of the day as she reigned supreme in the under 70kg final with a narrow 4-2 victory against Japan’s Mei Shindo.

American Alexis Bleau and Bulgaria's Boriana Borisova both did enough for bronze with wins over Mongolia’s Tsetsegbayar Byambadorj and Hui-tsu Chang of Taiwan respectively.

The results handed Japan the team total on 79 points, with Russian taking silver four points adrift of the leaders and United States securing bronze on 49.

“Russia really came on strong today, so I was a little worried about our position in the standings,” Japan head coach Shoko Yoshimura said.

“We didn’t have as many gold medals as we have had in the recent past, but we collected a lot of medals of different colours.

“It was really a team effort and we’re happy for the win.”
