Five-times Paralympic Alpine skiing champion Anna Schaffelhuber of Germany has added another prize to her growing collection after she was named best female athlete with an impairment at a recent awards ceremony in Cologne.

Schaffelhuber earned all of her titles at Sochi 2014 and also claimed two golds at the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Alpine Skiing World Championships in Panorama, Canada, earlier this year.

Her performance in the Russian resort saw her become only the second female athlete at a Winter Paralympic Games to win gold in all five Alpine skiing events.

It also helped her to the Best Female Athlete of the Year prize at the Paralympic Sport and Media Awards, held in Mexico City on November 14.

Double world champion Georg Kreiter scooped the best male athlete with an impairment award for his display in Panorama, where he reigned supreme in the giant slalom and super combined sitting events.

Germany’s women’s wheelchair basketball side, gold medallists at London 2012, took home the best team prize after they were crowned European champions in Worcester, Britain, in September.

Their victory over The Netherlands gave them a ninth European title and first since they claimed Paralympic gold three years ago.

The winners of each award, except the best young athlete, were decided by a public vote, which came after German sports journalists had put together a shortlist of three athletes in each category.

The best young athlete prize was selected by a jury and was given to Johannes Floors, a member of the German 4x100 metres relay T42-47 team which clinched gold at the IPC Athletics World Championships in Doha in a European record time of 41.86sec.

Floors also secured individual silver and looks likely to be a part of the German contingent at next year’s Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.
