Construction work on the eagerly-anticipated Gahanga Olympic Stadium in Rwanda will begin later this year, the Rwandan Housing Authority (RHA) has announced.

The RHA have been tasked with building the brand-new facility in the Kicukiro District in capital city Kigali, which has a budget of around $120 million (£86.2 million/€109 million).

Work will officially begin when the funds have been mobilised, according to RHA director general Didier Sagashya.

It comes after the original plans for the Stadium were scrapped by the Rwandan Government back in June 2014 following concerns over faults detected in the architectural design, which was being built by Turkish construction company Bibilax Ltd.

The venue is set to become the main sporting hub in Kigali and will include a football pitch surrounded by an athletics track.

It will also feature a series of Olympic-standard facilities such as a swimming pool and gymnastics equipment in a bid to improve the performance of the African nation at future Olympic Games.

As well as the Olympic Stadium, which will cost around $60 million (£43 million/€55 million) of the overall budget and will have a capacity of 40,000, the facility will also include an exhibition park.

The Ministry of Commerce, Ministry of Sports and Culture, Private Sector Federation will fund the project.

“We have developed the concepts and the next step is the feasibility study,” Sagashya told the Rwanda express.

“Our plan is to make sure that the stadium together with the construction of the Rwanda International Exhibition Pack can fit on the same piece of land.

“We are going to meet with the Ministry of Sports and Culture and other partners so that we can discuss about the project designed concepts.”

It is hoped the brand-new Stadium will increase the sporting development in the country, with a view to helping them achieve their first-ever Olympic medal.
