China's women began with two 3-0 victories in Group A as the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) World Team Championships opened at the Stadium Malawati Shah Alamin in Kuala Lumpur.

The winners of the last two tournaments and this year's heavy favourites brushed aside Hungary in their opener. 

World champion Ding Ning set the ball rolling with a 11-1, 12-10, 11-4 win over Mercedes Nagyvaradi.

She was backed up by Olympic champion Li Xiaoxia but she needed five games to dispatch Szandra Pergel 11-3, 11-9, 9-11, 9-11, 11-4.

Chen Meng then confirmed the victory after coming from behind to beat Dora Madarasz 7-11, 11-9, 11-9, 11-1.

The Chinese were then too strong for hosts Malaysia as Liu Shiwen began by beating Ho Ying 11-5, 11-3, 11-4.

Zhu Yuling saw off Ng Sock Khim 11-2, 11-2, 11-4 before Chen won for a second time in the day, 11-2, 11-7, 11-3 against Li Sian Alice Chang.

Malaysia had earlier lost 3-0 to a Romanian side who won by the same scoreline against Spain in their second match.

Chinese Taipei beat Spain and Hungary to also boast a 100 per cent record.

In Group B, Japan, Germany and North Korea all made it two wins out of two, with The Netherlands doubling up in Group C and Hong Kong and South Korea doing likewise in Group D.

In the men's competition, the Chinese were also in good form as the defending champions beat Greece 3-0.

Xu Xin, a six-time World Championship gold medallist, saw off Kalinikos Kreanga 3-11, 11-7, 11-8, 11-8 with Zhang Jike beating Ioannis Sgouropoulos 11-4, 12-10, 12-10.

Fan Zhendong wrapped up the win with a 12-10, 12-10, 9-11, 11-7 success over Panagiotis Gionis.

There were also Group A wins for Austria and North Korea, who saw off Czech Republic and Chinese Taipei respectively.

In Group B, European champions Germany defeated Denmark while Sweden beat England and France defeated hosts Malaysia.

Group C saw Japan beat Belarus, Portugal see off Ukraine and Poland beat Singapore, with South Korea, Hong Kong and Italy beating Croatia, Romania and Russia respectively in Group D.

The tournament is due to continue tomorrow and conclude with the finals next Sunday (March 6).
