The Japanese was knocked from her perch after a 5-4 defeat to China’s Sun Yanan at the Asian Championships in Bangkok, and has slipped from top spot to third.

Stadnyk, a World Championships silver medallist last year who has two freestyle Olympic medals, is now recognised as the UWW’s best flyweight after winning at the Ukraine International, with Sun climbing up into second position.

It means that Stadnyk, who won the European Games on home soil in Baku in 2015, is now the one to catch in the run-up to the Rio 2016 Olympics.

It is the second month in a row that China has had a hand in a new number one being crowned in women’s wrestling.

In January, World Championship silver medallist Zhou Feng triumphed at the Rio 2016 Olympics test event to claim top spot in the 69kg standings.

She was aided by Canada’s Dorothy Yeates beating world champion and former number one Natalia Vorobieva in the quarter-finals.

Yeates went on to lose to Zhou in the gold medal bout.

Elsewhere, there were no other changes at the top of the UWW women’s rankings with most world number ones spending time away from the mat.

Oksana Herhel was the only other top-ranked wrestler in action, with the 60kg world champion testing the waters at 58kg, where she lost 8-5 in the final of her home tournament the Ukraine International.

She was beaten by Azerbaijan’s Natalya Sinishin, who normally wrestles at 55kg.
