Defending women’s champion Carolina Marin avoided a first round exit at the  117th All England Open Badminton Championships after battling through a three-game encounter with South Korea’s Bae Yeon-ju at the Barclaycard Arena in Birmingham/

The Spaniard and world number one struggled at the net in the early stages of the match and found herself three-game points down to her rival.

Marin clawed her way back into the game and eventually took the opener 25-23, with the crowd then anticipating she would take full control of the match.

Instead, she was forced into a decider as Bae secured the second 22-20.

The South Korean was unable to complete a comeback win, though, as Marin took the final game 21-15.

“It’s been a long time since my last Superseries event and I’ve just recovered from a shoulder injury,” Marin said.

“I have to cut out the mistakes.”
