Geno Petriashvili of Georgia secured his maiden European Wrestling Championships title and helped his country to the men’s team freestyle crown with the gold medal in the 125 kilograms category in the Riga Arena.

Petriashvili, who had knocked out defending champion Taha Akgul of Turkey earlier today, cruised to a dominant 11-0 victory over Poland’s Robert Boran to clinch the title in style.

The Georgian dominated proceedings from the outset and was already 6-0 in front by the midway point and asserted his clear gulf in clash over his opponent on his way to earning a technical fall.

Bronze medals in the category went to Aleksey Nikolaev of Belarus and Ukraine’s Alen Zaseev after they beat Lyuben Iliev of Bulgaria and Hungary's Daniel Ligeti respectively.

“I’m so happy with the win since I think I wrestled well all day,” said Petriashvili.

“And, I’m happy we [Georgia] won the team title and I could be a part of that.”

Magomedmurad Gadzhiev of Poland also topped the podium at a European Wrestling Championships for the first time as he reigned supreme in the men’s 70kg category, beating David Tlashadze of Georgia in the gold medal contest.

Nikolay Kurtev of Bulgaria ousted Adrian Moise of Romania for the first bronze, with the other going to Azamat Nurikov of Belarus after he overcame Zaurbek Sidakov.

The triumph for Petriashvili, along with Tlashadze’s silver, saw Georgia snatch the team title from the grasp of Russia as they finished on a score of 59 points, five more than their fierce rivals.

Ukraine’s solitary silver and three bronze was enough for them to claim third spot on the standings.

Natalya Sinishin clinched her first European crown for adopted-country Azerbaijan, beating 19-year-old Grace Bullen of Norway in the final of the 58kg category.

Sinishin, a two-time European champion for Ukraine, proved too strong for the European Games bronze medallist and wrapped up a comfortable 3-1 win to take gold.

Anna Vasilenko of the Ukraine beat Elin Nilsson of Sweden and Mimi Hristova of Belarus ousted Luisa Niemisch of Germany to clinch a bronze medal apiece.

Hristova’s team-mate Maria Mamashuk recorded a thumping 9-0 victory over Ilana Kratysh in the women’s 69kg to seal her maiden European crown and prolong the Israeli’s wait for a gold medal as she has now finished in silver medal position for four consecutive years.

The two available bronze went to Turkey’s Buse Tosun and Alina Makhynia of the Ukraine following their respective victories over Signe Marie Store of Norway and Romanian Adina Popescu.

Ukraine also secured top spot in the team competition with a total tally of 59 points, 10 more than closest challengers Belarus.
