Shiffrin had headed into the event knowing she would not be able to claim the overall World Cup crown for the discipline, despite having earned four wins, as Sweden’s Frida Hansdotter was well clear at the top of the standings.

The 21-year-old nevertheless stamped her authority on the event by recording a time of 51.03sec with the home skier Wendy Holdener her nearest rival, ending a second adrift.

Shiffrin posted a  time of 52.93, the quickest in the second run, to claim the overall win in a combined time of 1min 43.96sec.

Slovakia’s Veronika Velez Zuzulova claimed the silver medal after ending 2.03 seconds further back and Hansdotter celebrated her overall World Cup triumph by finishing third in 1:46.27.

"It's an amazing day for me," said Hansdotter, after receiving her crystal globe.

"To stand there with the globe is something I have always dreamed of and I just don't have words to explain the feelings and emotions and what this means to me."

France celebrated a second clean sweep of the season after they dominated the men’s giant slalom competition.

Thomas Fanara emerged as the victor, posting a combined time of 2:14.92 from his two runs, with team-mate Alexis Pinturault ending 0.02 seconds off the pace.

Mathieu Faivre crossed the line 0.14 behind the winner to finish third, sealing his third podium of the season.

Austria’s Marcel Hirscher, who had already won the overall giant slalom title ahead of the final event, finished fifth in 2:15.84.

The World Cup is due to conclude tomorrow with the women’s giant slalom and men’s slalom competitions.
