Russia dominated the opening day of tumbling competition at the European Union of Gymnastics (UEG) Trampoline Championships at the Pisuerga Sports Centre in Valladolid in Spain.

Tagir Murtazaev led the charge of the Russian team in the men’s competition after scoring 38,700 and 39,800 points respectively with his two routines to finish top of the qualification standings on 78,500.

Defending champion Kristof Willerton followed closely behind, the British star achieving a tally of 77,600 points to comfortable claim one of the eight spots in the final.

His title, though, will come until significant threat from the Russian team with Grigory Noskov placing third in the standings on 77,500 points, while Timofei Podust and Denmark’s Anders Emil Wesch both scored 76,800.

With only two athletes from each country advancing to the final, Podust failed to qualify after finishing third of the Russian team.

It allowed Mikhail Malkin to become the first tumbler from Azerbaijan to reach the final at the Championships after finishing in ninth place on 72,700 points.

Russia’s Anna Korobeinikova finished top of the standings in the women’s event after being awarded a score of 68,600 points by the judges.

Lucie Colebeck and Rachel Davies completed the top three with the British duo scoring 67,600 and 65,600 respectively.

Portugal’s Andreia Robalo qualified first for the women’s double mini-trampoline final by achieving a tally of 68,100 points, with Russia’s Polina Troianova and Irina Alekseeva completing the top three on 66,900 and 66,700 respectively. 

The Russian team finished in the top four positons in the men’s standings with only Aleksandr Odintsov and Mikhail Zalomin advancing to the final after the duo received scores of 76,500 and 76,000 points respectively.

While the senior events were all about qualification on the opening day of the Championships, the junior team trampoline competition drew to a close.

Belarus triumphed in the boy’s event after their four-strong team scored 163,330 points in the final, with Britain and Russia completing the podium after finishing on 162,420 and 158,125.

The Russian team claimed the girls’ title after they scored 151,120 points to edge out Belarus, who ended with 150,070 to take silver.

Germany secured the bronze medal by scoring 147,880.
