Ukraine’s Oleg Verniaiev claimed two gold medals on the final day of action at the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) World Challenge Cup, triumphing in the vault and horizontal bar events, at the Lausitz-Arena in Cottbus. 

Fresh from winning silver in the pommel horse and bronze in the floor exercise yesterday, Verniaiev returned to, firstly, ensure top honours in the vault with a total of 15,233 points.

He then went on to double his gold medal tally, taking the horizontal bar crown with a score of 14,966 points.

The 2014 parallel bars world champion was followed onto the vault podium by China’s Ruiyang Qu and Switzerland’s Benjamin Gischard, who managed 14,899 and 14,833 points respectively.

Christian Baumann and Pablo Braegger came joint-second in the horizontal bars after the two Swiss gymnasts posted 14,766.

Baumann also had to settle for the runners-up spot in the parallel bars.

His score of 15,500 points was bettered only by home favourite Marcel Nguyen, who registered 15,666.

Another German, Lukas Dauser, rounded out the top three after totalling 15,366 points.

The Netherlands’ Lisa Top won the gold medal on the floor thanks to a score of 13,600 points as Poland’s Katarzyna Jurkowska-Kowalska took silver with 13,533 and Germany’s Sophie Scheder the bronze with 13,333.

Jurkowska-Kowalska and Scheder had both finished one place higher in the balance beam earlier in the day.

Their respective scores of 14,033 and 13,900 points saw them come away with the gold and silver medals, while The Netherlands’ Sanne Wevers was third with 13,666.
