China's men's top seed Chen Long again came from behind to keep his hopes alive at the Badminton World Federation (BWF) Singapore Open at The Indoor Stadium today.

The 27-year-old double world champion beat India's Prannoy Kumar 18-21, 21-18, 21-19 in the first round yesterday and found it tough again in the second round today.

He eventually saw off Boonsak Ponsana of Thailand 17-21, 21-18, 21-9 to reach the quarter-finals.

His compatriot Lin Dan, the gold medallists at the last two Olympic Games, could be his biggest challenger at the Super Series event.

The number two seed eased into the last eight by beating Indonesia's Jonatan Christie 21-13, 21-7.

Denmark's fourth seed Viktor Axelsen is out, however, as South Korean Son Wan-ho came from behind to triumph 14-21, 21-12, 21-7.

In the women's draw, the match of the round saw Japan's number two seed Nozomi Okuhara collide with China's unseeded defending champion Sun Yu.

It was the Chinese player who progressed, 21-16, 21-11, keeping her hopes of defending the title alive.

Spanish top seed Carolina Marin defeated Thailand's Nichaon Jindapon 21-19, 21-15, while India Super Series and Malaysian Open winner Ratchanok Intanon also went through as she bids to win three Super Series titles in a row.

She saw off Hsu Ya-ching of Chinese Taipei, 21-19, 21-17.

Commonwealth Games champion Michelle Li of Canada was knocked out, losing to Japan's Akane Yamaguchi 21-12, 19-21, 21-8 in a topsy-turvy affair.

The competition in Singapore is due to continue tomorrow.
